More and more people are seeking natural and healthy ways to build a home. So it is, that the popularity of natural plaster walls is growing. Natural clay walls have been particularly popular in the southwest, in such areas as California, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, but it has recently become more popular in the Northeast as well.

Natural plaster functions as an alternative to paint, which can off-gas harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and require regular maintenance. Plaster also helps regulate interior humidity and temperature, creating a more comfortable environment. This is particularly beneficial in areas of the house with high humidity, such as in bathrooms, basements and kitchens. The hydrophilic (ability to hold water) quality of clay allows it to absorb moisture in the air. Clay works as thermal mass absorbing heat during the day in the winter and releasing it in the evening when there is no solar heat. The walls absorb the coolness in the night in the summer, releasing it into the air in the daytime – allowing the house to feel more comfortable. Because plaster walls absorb moisture, indoor temperatures stay at a more comfortable level, which cuts down on the need for air-conditioning.

Clay is available in abundance in the earth and can be put back into the earth when it is no longer needed, rather than going into a landfill. It has been used for thousands of years because it is a very durable and hard material, although easy to install on the walls. There is a short learning curve to apply the clay and it is easy to repair and clean.

Natural clay is resistant to mold and mildew making it a more healthy alternative. Walls also repel dust rather than attracting it making it cleaner and a better option for people with allergies. It is non-toxic unlike some other paints and finishes. It is more sustainable, being resistant to cracking, unlike stucco.

Natural plaster is made from clay and natural aggregates and can be colored with mineral pigments. It repels dust rather than attracting it and is resistant to mold and mildew, which makes interior air quality healthier in general and specifically for people with allergies. Plaster is better for the environment because it requires minimal energy to produce and contains a large percentage of recycled materials.
