The home has an indoor-outdoor aesthetic in a true California spirit.

In the heart of California’s Napa Valley, a resort-style estate is perched atop a hill, overlooking the picturesque vineyards and beyond. The owners, real estate power couple Pamala and Ted Deikel, created the ideal space to commune with nature year-round.

The  retreat encompasses 12,795 square feet on 21 acres in St. Helena. The setting is as fit to be a secluded paradise for two as it is a venue for 200. 101 Rutherford Estate Road includes a 1,700-bottle wine cellar, an infinity-edge pool, fitness room and spa, as well as a 10-car motor court. Round Hill Estate was completed in 2014 by Deikel Design and Development and is on the market for $22 million.

Nicole Needham and Neal Ward of Compass real estate agency are listing agents for the property, which is one of only five parcels on Rutherford Road. Needham says the home was inspired by the Deikels’ admiration for Auberge du Soleil resort in Napa, where they stayed during the construction of their home.

It took more than five years to build and landscape the property, which rises nearly 300 feet off the valley floor. The Deikels had to acquire permits to build a road to the top of Round Hill. A local water diviner was brought in to find fresh water in the area, which resulted in the discovery of a fresh-water aquifer.

An electronic gate allows access to a paved road winding up the side of Round Hill. This is where the breathtaking 200-plus-degree views of Napa Valley begin to unfold.

A cascading waterfall built into a retaining wall adds appeal to the landscape. Native oaks, lush ferns and tall pine trees line the access road.

“The masterpiece of the property is that it’s built up on this hill,” says Needham. “You have this beautiful forest-like feel to it, but you also have this landscape of vineyard below you. The property is very unique for the valley to sort of be jutted up the way it is. There are very few residential homes on that hill, and this is the one that has that view.”

Needham adds, “As you pull up into the property, there’s a rock that says Rutherford Hill. It opens up to these beautiful iron gates. You have a real sense of entry.”

The access road leads to an impressive motor court rimmed by olive trees, elevated planter boxes, seasonal roses and palm trees. Two fully-equipped guest homes with terraces are located off the motor courts for secluded visitor stays.

The west-facing terrace has valley views, an infinity-edge pool with spa, a heated veranda with outdoor kitchen and extendable awnings, a gas fire pit and a pool house with one half-bath and sauna. The rear courtyard with lush forest views is ideal for large-scale entertaining.

A portico entrance shelters the solid-oak double front door, presenting a warm welcome to the home. The main home consists of three levels encompassing about 10,065 square feet of living space, with four bedroom suites, six full bathrooms and one half bath.

The interiors and picturesque surroundings blend seamlessly through several architectural details, including picture windows and sliding-glass panels.

The two-story foyer is filled with light from a large domed skylight and custom chandelier. This space features Venetian plaster walls and polished concrete slab floors with inlaid white oak beams. A symmetrical two-part imperial staircase ascends to the main level, where a landing accesses indoor and outdoor living spaces.

Every element of the property was built for lavish living. The entertaining level includes a great room with two fireplaces, dining room, commercial-grade kitchen with breakfast nook, which all open through a wall of glass doors to terraces.

“The sellers love to entertain, and they wanted a home that was the ultimate entertainment home,” says Needham. “There’s this beautiful courtyard off the kitchen that can seat 100 people. It’s this intimate courtyard with a whole other view, taking advantage of the landscaping and environment.”

The large secluded courtyard presents the ultimate spot for evening soirées, complete with large stone pavers, Japanese maples, shade trees, mature ferns, verdant palm trees and boulder-constructed retaining walls.

The large great room has concrete flooring inlaid with oak planks and a tall cathedral ceiling finished with exposed oak beam trusses. A wall of glass doors opens to the terrace and frames views of the valley and beyond. Built-in speakers and an HDTV provide the ultimate indoor-outdoor experience. Two gas fireplaces have glass panels and stone mantelpieces.

A guest wing off the main entertaining space includes two guest suites that each have one bedroom with a sitting room, a fireplace, bathroom and a separate terrace.

The master suite takes up the entire upper level and includes a walk-out deck, panoramic-view terrace, two full bathrooms, two dressing rooms and adjoining sitting room.

“Just when you think the view couldn’t get better it does because you have gone up a floor and you have an even more expansive view,” says Needham.

The staff apartment, an ideal living arrangement for service quarters or extended visitors, provides personal access from the ground level. The two bedroom suites in the guest bedroom wing of the home have separate sitting rooms, a walk-in closet, a high-definition TV, wet bar, gas fireplace, and double French doors to private decks. Each en suite bathroom is finished in tile with a stone slab single-sink vanity, glass-enclosed shower and soaking tub.

The lower level is also equipped with a 1,700-bottle wine cellar, fitness room with spa, laundry room, two-car garage and a catering kitchen with prep area and elevator to the main level. The house is being sold furnished with a few items excluded.
