Real Estate Industry News

Jac Vanek is a media personality, influencer, entrepreneur and co-host of the E! television show and podcast LadyGang. Anyone who has been listening to Vanek and her co-hosts Keltie Knight and Becca Tobin, knows that after years of living with other people, she finally moved to her own apartment on the west side of Los Angeles in 2018.

Settling Down

After years of moving around various Los Angeles neighborhoods from Silver Lake to Westwood, Vanek was incredibly excited to finally settle down in an apartment that had a view of the ocean. “I grew up in Orange County. I knew I wanted to be by the water. The ocean is my happy place. This is the first place that is completely mine, that I’m not sharing with anyone or styling with anyone else.”

Vanek also decided this move would have minimal baggage. “I sold everything from my old apartment and I started from ground zero,” she says. “It’s been a process. I went through a really bad breakup before moving into my old apartment. So, I wanted nothing around that reminded me of my ex. I’m starting a new chapter in my life.”

But between her day job, LadyGang duties, and recording true crime podcast The First Degree, she didn’t have much time to decorate.

Enter Modsy

While Vanek is known for designing humorous statement apparel and accessories, she admits her skills don’t necessarily translate to decorating. Vanek had a Pinterest board and an idea of the look she wanted, but wasn’t exactly sure how to execute the project. “I know I like this chair and that vase, but I don’t know how to arrange them in a room or put something on a bookshelf to make it aesthetically pleasing. That’s where I knew Modsy could help me.” Using Modsy allowed Vanek to find a cohesive aesthetic that she couldn’t achieve on her own.

How It Works

Modsy is an online interior design service that enables users to see what furniture and accessories can look like in their homes through three-dimensional renderings. This makes it incredibly easy to compare what rooms can look like with various options in place.

They also allow unlimited revisions. This was especially important for Vanek because it meant she didn’t need to waste time and energy buying things, seeing what they looked like in the space and then ultimately needing to return them.

Users submit photos and measurements of each room. They also take a quiz so the designer can get an idea of what they like and what they’re looking for. Modsy currently offers three different packages.

Vanek waited a few months after moving before starting to decorate. In that time, she acquired several pieces of furniture on her own. “They were able to take the pieces I already had, re-arrange them and show me different layouts of what my rooms could look like,” she says.

Modsy’s designers are happy to work with the items their customers already have, in addition to suggesting new pieces. The brand sources from over 100 well-known retailers including Wayfair and CB2 .

She also liked that the renderings were shoppable. “I could see how much the coffee table was and where the nightstands were from. So I was making sure things were in my price range and from companies I trusted. If I didn’t like something, I could swap it out.”

Earthy Modern Vibes

In her previous living spaces, Vanek purchased items from flea markets, thrift stores, etc. “It felt very hodgepodge and looking back, very messy,” she says. She wanted a different feel for this place, with each choice being very intentional. “I’m not just trying to throw a bunch of old books on a shelf. I wanted an earthy-modern vibe with a clean aesthetic.”

Vanek also felt very drawn to earth tones. “I used to stray away from browns a lot, but there is such a warm, inviting, homey feel. When I’m home, I want [the space to feel] safe and cozy.”

Vanek sourced her furniture from a variety of places. While her dresser was a Craigslist find and her bed frame was from Etsy, the rest of the pieces were from CB2, Urban Outfitters, Interior Define and West Elm among others.

Modsy also helped Vanek stay on budget. “I didn’t want to spend $3000 on a console. Everything was pretty much in my range and if it wasn’t, they offered me a budget-friendly version.”

Just A Little Bit Of DIY

In addition to working with Modsy, Vanek added her own personal touches. This includes the line drawing pillows and artwork.

She even designed the text art in the bedroom using quotes from Charles Bukowski and Anthony Bourdain. “I’m so picky when it comes to artwork, I ended up doing it myself,” she says. But realistically, Vanek probably only had time for this because Modsy took care of the larger projects for her.
