1. Oakland is the only major city with a natural saltwater lake

Lake Merritt was actually the country’s first official wildlife refuge. Located in the heart of Oakland, this stunning lake is the perfect place to spend some time outdoors. You can cruise around the lake on a gondola, bird watch, or keep an eye out for the “Oakness Monster.” 

2. The Mai Tai was created in Oakland

Although this delicious drink has become synonymous with tropical beaches and Hawaii, it was actually created in Oakland, CA by Victor J. Bergeron. This iconic tropical drink made its debut in 1944 at his restaurant Trader Vic’s.

3. Oakland has over 80 parks and one of the most popular is actually a cemetery

Mountain View Cemetery, which is a whopping 226-acres, is situated in the hills above Oakland and boasts sweeping views. It’s become a popular spot for those living in Oakland to take a stroll, hangout with friends and family, and take in the gorgeous scenery.

4. There are hundreds of hidden staircases throughout the city

While it may sound odd at first, there actually was a practical reason for the installation of so many staircases in Oakland. They were built after the San Francisco earthquake and fire in 1906 and intended to make access throughout the hilly neighborhoods easier. 

5. You can thank Oakland for Rocky Road ice cream

If you’ve ever enjoyed a big, delicious bowl of Rocky Road, just know this flavor was created here. In 1929, William Dreyer added walnuts and marshmallows to chocolate ice cream in Oakland, creating this fan-favorite flavor.

6. Redwood Regional Park is located just outside of Oakland

This Bay Area hidden gem boasts 150-foot coast redwoods and tons of trails for walking and hiking. As you explore this 1,833-acre park, keep an eye out for wildlife, enjoy a picnic, or plan ahead and stay in the overnight camping area.

7. Oakland is one of the most diverse cities in the U.S.

Residents here take pride in the diversity of their vibrant city. There are over 125 languages spoken in Oakland and a wide variety of races and ethnicities represented.

8. The oldest bonsai tree in the country is preserved in Oakland

The Bonsai Garden at Lake Merritt houses the largest collection of bonsai trees in California. Here you’ll find the historic Daimyo oak tree that was gifted by the Japanese government in the 1860s.

9. The popsicle was invented here

In 1905, an 11-year-old named Frank Epperson accidentally left his beverage outside with a stirring stick still in it. He found his drink frozen the next morning and voila – the creation of the popsicle.

10. Oakland is known for being a hub of creativity and music

The city has a melting pot of different genres and sounds, and has had a prominent influence on the West Coast music scene. There are dozens of live music venues throughout the city, with famous destinations like Eli’s Mile High Club still operating.
